High Intensity Interval Training

A lot of people nowadays do not have time to do much. Because of their hectic work schedule, people have even sacrificed their health to try and live a “happy” life. However, exercise is of great importance as there are many health benefits and it most importantly, it helps keep your immune system strong. HIIT, otherwise known as High Intensity Interval Training is probably the solution to a better life if you are suffering from not having time to go to the gym. HIIT, is great because you can do it at home and the biggest selling point is that it only takes about 20 minutes. By the end of 20 minutes (if you can make it that far, you will be dead and dripping with sweat). According to Michele Olson, Ph.D., “It would take five times the amount of typical cardio exercise to shed the same number of calories you can in a four-minute Tabata.” Tabata is a type of high intensity interval training. So you can burn the same amount of calories running for an hour as doing HIIT for about 20 minutes. The only catch is that for these 20 minutes, you have to give it your all. This is why HIIT is a killer workout. It takes a ridiculous amount of energy to do. I’ve personally done it before and am dripping with sweat within the first 5 minutes.

So how do you do it? This video shows you a great example of HIIT. I personally like doing circuits with weights because I also want more muscle mass. You can customize your own HIIT. Any compound movement, an exercise that requires a lot of muscles to be recruited at once, such as squats, sprinting or burpees are a great place to start if you’re just a beginner. The benefits of this type of training are astounding. I really recommend you do it!
